Analog CCTV Systems and IP/Network CCTV Systems

In analog CCTV systems, the cameras capture analog signal and transfer the signal through coax cable to the Digital Video Recorder (DVR) which converts the analog signal to digital and outputs compressed video stream. As well as, DVR can record video to hard drives for later retrieval. Some intelligent algorithms such as motion detection and license plate recognition can be integrated into DVR. The authorised client programs can view different cameras via DVR.

Limitations of Analog CCTV

For large-scale surveillance applications, analog cameras require complicated cabling schemes that can be quite expensive and also challenging to install.

  • Low Resolution Low Resolution

The analog video standard NTSC or PAL was developed long time ago. So the   camera’s image quality is not satisfying. Therefore, resolution is still the main reason that the CCTV shifts from analog to IP/Network. For HD IP cameras, the resolution can reach 1.3 megapixels or mall and almost 4 times the resolution of full D1 analog.

Many of the advanced features now available with IP cameras (for instance: megapixel resolution, digital zoom, and video analytics), which are unavailable in analog CCTV systems. It’s challenging to run cable in analog CCTV systems, while in IP/network CCTV systems; the Cat 5/6 UTP cable is enough.



IP/Network CCTV Systems


  • Two-way audio via a single network cable allows users to communicate with what they are seeing (e.g. gas stationclerk assisting a customer on how to use the prepay pumps)
  • Flexibility: IP cameras can be moved around anywhere on an IP network (including wireless).
  • Distributed intelligence: with IP cameras, video analytics can be placed in the camera itself allowing scalability in analytics solutions.
  • Transmission of commands for PTZ (pantiltzoom) cameras via a single network cable.
  • Encryption & authentication: IP cameras offer secure data transmission through encryption and authentication methods such as WPAWPA2TKIPAES.
  • Remote accessibility: live video from selected cameras can be viewed from any computer, anywhere, and also from many mobile smartphonesand other devices. Remote accessibility also prevents police officers from confiscating video and audio evidence that you can use against them
  • IP cameras are able to function on a wireless network
  • PoE – Power over Ethernet: Modern IP cameras have the ability to operate without an additional power supply. They can work with the PoE-protocol which gives power via the Ethernet cable.
